It has been a while since my last post and we have been busy! Here are the highlights:

  • Emily McNamara graduated with her Master's in Biochemistry this May.
  • We welcomed Akhil Patel to the lab as our newest summer student.
  • Kerry Sun was awarded a Canada Graduate Scholarship-Master's.
  • I took a road trip with Angelle Britton and Tark Patel to the 9th Annual Protein Structure, Function and Malfunction (PSFaM) Meeting in Saskatoon. We all had a blast meeting the attendees in person and learning about the latest in Protein Folding research from our colleagues in Western Canada. Congratulations to Angelle who gave a talk and Tark who won a Poster Prize. We will definitely be heading back for next year's meeting!
  • We FINALLY took a new lab picture :)

It is the start of a new academic year for the Mok lab. We said goodbye to some of our members and welcomed some new people to our team.

  • Hallie Ng - Moved to a new position in Chemistry at the UofA
  • Justin Kim - Started Dentistry at the UofA
  • Kerry Sun - Started his Master's program in the Mok lab
  • Tark Patel, Abdallah Alwan and WooSung Choo - Started their undergraduate research projects in the Mok lab

Some of our team members are making some interesting videos! You can check them out below:

Allan Yarahmady made this how-to video for performing cappilary gel electrophoresis on the Wes system (ProteinSimple).

Emily McNamara made this how-not-to video for bacterial transformation. Enjoy!

The year 2020 has been tough for everyone. As a lab, we have been adjusting our projects and work styles so that we can still do great research.

This animation was created by Shreya Mulpuri, a high school student participating in this summer's Alberta Innovates Heritage Youth Researcher Summer (HYRS) Program. Shreya was assisted by fantastic mentors, Emily McNamara and Madeleine Ridgway.

I donned a GoPro to record a lab training video. Teaching new and old lab members research techniques while maintaining physical distancing!

Despite everthing that is going on, our team members are still being recognized for their research efforts. I wanted to take a minute and congratulate them on their achievements!

Heba Iftikhar, Maggie Wang and Gurreet Bhandal all showed off their research at the Summer Student Research Day. Special congrats to Gurreet who won one of the poster award prizes!

New lab members and student recognitions

Posted: Semptember 3, 2019

This summer/fall we welcomed some new members to the Lab. Lion Budrass joined our lab as a Master's student studying chaperone functions in neurons. Eman is starting an undergraduate research project on protein translation. Madeleine Ridgway is our newest undergraduate volunteer and is cloning some exciting new constructs for the lab!

Congratulations to Emily McNamara in our lab for being awarded a graduate teaching assistantship award from the Department. The lab is happy she is getting recognition for her awesome teaching skills!

Summary

Posted: Summer 2019

The summer was so busy that I had no time to post updates so I am just going to jam the entire summary into a single post. We had a whole group of undergraduate students (Gabrielle, Gurreet, Heba, Maggie, Madeleine, Michelle) join us for the summer of 2019. It was chaotic and we had to share/make desks just to fit everyone but it was also a lot of fun.

Some of the highlights:

  • Our department held a retreat in Banff. Perfect weather and great science!
  • We did an "escape the room" lab event
  • One student tried to get us to eat wild berries they picked in the forest
  • We purified A LOT of proteins
  • We equipped our lab with some new instruments thanks to the Canadian Foundation for Innovation and said a proper goodbye to some old equipment that got us through the early days.

Also, we said goodbye to Heather Baker in the Mok lab. Heather was an undergraduate project student who worked on chaperone proteomics. We are sad to see her go but excited for her new adventure as a graduate student at UBC.

The Mok Lab is going paperless!

Posted: January 15, 2018

In an effort to promote teamwork and organization, both in our lab and with our collaborators, we are switching to electronic lab notebooks (ELNs). We chose the SciNote electronic lab notebook to manage all our data for several key reasons:

1) The ease with which our team members can share data and protocols in real time. We can also easily update protocols and standardize them across the entire lab.

2) It is economical, so academic labs can save their funds for students and experiments.

3) Data storage is secure and SciNote is used and trusted by other institutions e.g. National Institutes of Health.

For any PIs or students thinking about switching to ELNs I recommend giving SciNote a try. It is free to get started and easy to adopt. You can even start small by using it for summer/undergrad students. Just create a project folder for each student and see if it improves communication and your student’s training experience.
